Oprah Going Off The Air Helps Fight Obesity?

In 6 days…the final episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show will air. For my mom and millions of other people, its truly devastating news.
Yesterday, I was talking to her on the phone and she said “I’m so upset…Oprah was part of my family.”
Oprah’s show has been on the air for 25 years and my mom has been there for all of them! Even though Oprah has a new gig, it won’t be the same for many people. Actually most people won’t even get the OWN network because it’s not on the basic cable line-up. In order to see her shows, you need super duper extended basic cable and pay between $80-110/month.
My mama doesn’t have an extra $100 a month and will have to go without Oprah. For now, she’ll rely on The Oprah Winfrey Show: 20th Anniversary Collection her granddaughter Rosetta bought her but a huge void will remain in her life. Typically she watched other TV leading up to Oprah’s show making it a 3-4 hour event every day. “Now, I guess I can work out more” she says.
Studies have repeatedly found that there is a positive correlation between watching television and obesity. The Nurses’ Health Study (Hu et al, 2003), for example, looked at 50,000 women, ages 30-55, to see if there was a relationship between prolonged TV watching and obesity. The study found strong evidence that television viewing and obesity were definitely linked, concluding that women had a 23% increased chance of obesity for every additional 2 hours of television time they watched.
One of the most memorable shows was when Tom Cruise jumped all over her couch. Maybe more people will jump off their couches and move! So whether you are watching less of Oprah or any television show, its a good thing for your health–you own it!
Thanks Oprah for 25 amazing years!
