Staying Fit Tips for Surgery

And right now, I’m writing this post on the eve of my rotator cuff repair. It was bound to happen after 17 years of training and recently competing  for my first figure show.

Like there’s ever a good time for something like this, but for me it couldn’t have come at a busier time in my life…

I’m a full time personal trainer and studio owner, promoting  my first book, and just launched my figure competition prep program. And for the first time, there is a wait list for sessions with me here in the studio!

After hearing I would need surgery, of course I got bummed out. Who doesn’t right? But I realized this is a perfect opportunity to help other people make it through illnesses and stay fit in the process.

Here are some of the things I’ve been doing to prepare for my surgery and get back in the game:

1. De-clutter your space. Do a little spring cleaning and get rid of stuff that may get in the way of you moving around freely. Also a clean space will help you focus on getting well and not all the stuff you are not getting done.

2. Plan ahead. Go grocery shopping for healthy snacks and meals while you are recuperating. Prepare meals ahead to be stored in the fridge or freezer. This will prevent the urge to just hit the fast food joint because you are not able to cook.

3. Watch your portions. You need to keep your body fueled after injuries but make sure you are not overeating. Don’t go on any extreme diets but since you won’t be as active–you have to rethink your caloric needs. Take a good multivitamin especially when cutting back on calories. Consult your doctor to make sure there are no interactions with medications you may be taking.

4. Assemble your team. Identify who will be helping you during recovery. Maybe a friend will come over and make meals, help you with errands or just sit and talk. Sometimes you can feel isolated when separated from your normal routine. Your friends and family can help you stay positive and connected.

5. Create a new fitness routine. If you are able to get back to some exercise, identify workouts you can do. With my shoulder injury, I won’t be doing any upper body workouts but can use cardio equipment to stay fit.

Hey, check out these awesome workouts you can do for all types of injuries. You really can stay fit while getting better!
