The Secret To Losing Weight: Portion Control

Everyone knows that in order to lose weight you have to burn off more than you take in, right? I am convinced the biggest challenge here is portion control. It sure doesn’t help things when you go into a restaurant and all the meal portions are huge. I think we sometimes are programmed to think we have to finish our food, even when we know we are past full.

There is a growing trend amongst the Hollywood stars to endorse such weight loss programs as Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, NutriSystems, and Slim Fast. It could be because they are receiving compensation, but no, I really think they are actually losing weight with these plans. Kathy Lee & Frank Gifford, Tommy Lasorda, Whoopie Goldberg, and Dan Marino are just a few celebrities who showed off new figures after following one of these programs. These programs offer support, teach portion control, and some even deliver the food right to your door!

Actress/singer/rapper Queen Latifah is the latest celebrity to front the Jenny Craig weight-loss plan. According to Celebrity Brands, Oscar-nominated star Queen Latifah, 37, will join the ranks of Kirstie Alley, Valerie Bertinelli, Monica Lewinsky and Cindy Williams by signing on to be the latest celebrity spokesperson for the weight-loss campaign of Jenny Craig. The ‘Hairspray’ star, well known for her fuller figure, will have a “very different campaign, focused on a healthier lifestyle, not on getting into a specific dress size,” says Scott Parker, Jenny Craig’s Marketing VP. The Jenny Craig program reportedly promotes healthy eating and exercise.

There is obviously something to these structured weight-loss programs. According to Sally Squires, “what the plans do best is teach proper portion control — a lost art for many consumers who are used to bloated servings of everything from burgers to lattes”. People want to be told what to eat, how much, and how often. It’s similar to why people get personal trainers, they want the guesswork taken out of it.

The biggest concern about these plans though is that for the cost they may not be providing enough of the right nutrients to support a healthy diet and lifestyle. Squire’s article noted that there may be a lack of whole grains and high amounts of high fructose corn syrup. Overall, the element of portion control is there. Bottom line, if you are willing and able to follow instructions and commit to making lifestyle changes, any of these plans could be the ticket to a lighter you!
