Not only does being overweight and obese suck, but it puts a drain on the pocketbook! Doctors have long known that medical bills are higher for obese people. Nowstudiesshow that women are taking the largest hit when it comes to other costs associated with being obese.
According to the Associated Press (AP)–Pepsi announced today plans to remove full-calorie, sugary drinks from schools around the world in the next two years. The company said Tuesday it will remove full-calorie, sweetened drinks from schools in more than 200 countries by 2012, marking the first such move by a major soft drink producer.
First Lady Michelle Obama officially kicked off a national campaign to combat childhood obesity on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 in Washington D.C. Dubbed “Let’s Move,” the project also received a presidential nod of support, to be backed up with as much as $1 billion a year in federal funds for 10 years. Earlier in the day, in the Oval Office, President Obama signed a formal memorandum establishing for the first time a national task force on childhood obesity — one that draws from the departments of the Interior, Health and Human Services, Agriculture and Education and is charged with turning the first lady’s ambitious list of proposals into action. The initiative concentrates on improved school lunches, increased physical activity, and more available nutritional education. A recent study conducted in Washington DC movie theaters revealed that enjoying a tasty bag of popcorn and soda is equivalent to wolfing down three McDonald’s Quarter Pounders plus 12 pats of butter. A laboratory analysis was commissioned by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). “Regal and AMC are our nominees for Best Supporting Actor in the Obesity Epidemic,” said CSPI senior nutritionist Jayne Hurley.

While an estimated 129.6 million Americans are overweight or obese, an alarming number of those Americans are African American. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 48.8 percent of adult African American women are obese, compared to 30.7 percent for white women; and African American boys and girls had higher rates and were 1.3 times as likely to be overweight than white kids of the same age.
