Every year its the same thing. The holidays are right around the corner and people start throwing in the towel! The buzz phrase is “well I expect to gain a few pounds anyway”.
So what’s the big deal gaining a little holiday weight, especially if its only a couple of pounds? According to researchers at the National Institutes of Health, most Americans never lose the weight they gain during the winter holidays. The pounds add up year after year, making holiday weight gain an important factor in adult obesity.
But you don’t have to fall into this trap. It is possible to enjoy holiday goodies without putting on a single pound. Portion control is the key. Check out these 5 tips to avoid holiday gain.
1. Know your stats – Get on the scale or pull out the tape measure before the holidays get here. Knowing your current stats will help you focus on not ruining all your hard work.
2. Don’t taste too much – Try to limit nibbling while cooking. Especially when you are following the same recipe. Dare yourself not to taste until the meal is served.
3. Slow your roll on the alcohol - Limit alcohol at holiday parties. It’s not just about calories but about control. If you drink a lot you, won’t have as much control over what you eat.
4. Use the “sandwich” technique - Workout out the day before the event and day after to make sure those few extra calories are burned off properly. Challenge yourself to even workout the day of your shindig.
5. Just say no – You can’t go to every party you’re get invited to. Be selective on which events you will attend. Maybe skip the work party and opt for the family gathering instead.
